SETU Expands Its Treadmill Facilities with Another h/p/cosmos mercury med

South East Technological University (SETU) has expanded its specialist treadmill facilities with another h/p/cosmos mercury med, supplied by HaB Direct.

The treadmill replaces an older Woodway model and will operate alongside an existing h/p/cosmos mercury med. By selecting a similar system, SETU can maintain consistency across its equipment while benefiting from the latest generation of h/p/cosmos control technology.

Continuing HaB Direct’s Relationship with SETU

This is not the first time HaB Direct has supported SETU with specialist treadmill equipment.

In March 2025, our team installed an h/p/cosmos pluto med at SETU Waterford. The treadmill was selected to help expand the university’s physiology laboratory facilities in response to the growth of its undergraduate degree programme.

That installation provided SETU Waterford with a compact and versatile treadmill for practical teaching and student research. This latest project continues our relationship with the university, helping SETU develop its equipment provision with another h/p/cosmos system.

A Familiar and Reliable Treadmill Solution

SETU wanted to replace an older Woodway treadmill while expanding its current testing and teaching capabilities. As the university already had experience using an h/p/cosmos mercury med, it wanted another machine that could work alongside the existing treadmill.

A like-for-like replacement offered several advantages. Staff could continue working with a familiar treadmill platform, while the comparable capabilities of the two mercury med systems could support a consistent approach across practical sessions, performance testing and research.

The latest treadmill also introduced SETU to the newer MCU6 UserTerminal, providing updated control, programming and data-display capabilities.

Why Choose the h/p/cosmos mercury med?

The h/p/cosmos mercury med is a versatile medical treadmill developed for applications including sports science, performance diagnostics, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Its 150 × 50 cm running surface provides space for a range of walking and running applications while retaining a footprint suited to many laboratories and clinical environments.

Key capabilities include:

  • A speed range of 0 to 22 km/h
  • Motorised elevation from 0 to 25 per cent
  • A maximum user weight of 200 kg
  • A durable, slip-resistant running belt
  • True zero-start functionality for controlled starts at very low speeds
  • Seven adjustable acceleration and deceleration levels
  • Heart-rate-controlled training and programmable exercise profiles
  • Compatibility with suitable ECG, CPET, blood pressure and performance diagnostic systems
  • Optional safety arch, fall-stop system and adjustable arm supports
  • Optional reverse belt rotation for supervised downhill walking and running applications

The combination of speed, elevation and programmable control makes the mercury med suitable for a variety of exercise protocols. It can be used for walking and running assessments, graded exercise testing, physiological testing, rehabilitation programmes and performance training.

With the coscom interface protocol, the treadmill can also communicate with compatible external systems. This supports applications involving ECG, spiroergometry, VO₂ max and CPET systems, blood pressure monitoring, motion analysis and biomechanics software.

Upgrading to the MCU6 UserTerminal

Although SETU selected a familiar treadmill model, the new system was supplied with the newer h/p/cosmos MCU6 UserTerminal.

The MCU6 combines a 10.1-inch touchscreen with physical controls for important functions such as starting, stopping, pausing and adjusting speed or elevation. The hardware buttons can remain practical when users are wearing medical gloves or when moisture makes touchscreen operation less convenient.

The interface can display parameters including speed, time, elevation, distance, heart rate, energy expenditure and power. Users can also create, store and edit programme profiles for different testing, training and rehabilitation protocols.

Additional MCU6 capabilities include:

  • Visual graphs for speed, elevation and heart rate
  • Storage of test and training data
  • Export of selected data and reports in formats including CSV and PDF
  • Pre-programmed protocols such as Bruce, Balke, Conconi and Naughton tests
  • Heart-rate-controlled adjustment of speed and elevation
  • USB connectivity and optional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth communication
  • Compatibility with suitable ECG, CPET, EMG and blood pressure systems
  • Remote diagnostic, maintenance and software support capabilities

This gives SETU the benefits of a familiar h/p/cosmos treadmill alongside a more modern and flexible control system.

Supporting Consistency and Long-Term Use

Selecting another mercury med means SETU can continue using a treadmill platform that its team already knows and trusts. It also helps create greater consistency across the university’s equipment, which can be valuable when staff and students are conducting repeatable testing protocols.

As SETU already has experience with both the mercury med and the previously installed pluto med, the latest addition further develops a versatile collection of h/p/cosmos treadmills for teaching, testing and research.

Stuart Jackson of HaB Direct commented:

“It was great to supply SETU with another h/p/cosmos mercury med treadmill. It shows the quality of the h/p/cosmos machines, and the service HaB Direct offers is second to none.”
