Specialist h/p/cosmos Treadmill Installation at Dublin City University

HaB Direct recently completed the installation of an h/p/cosmos saturn 300/125r treadmill at Dublin City University (DCU), helping to equip its new laboratory with a versatile solution for wheelchair, cycling and movement-based research.

The Project Requirements

Dublin City University conducted a comprehensive tender process for an oversized treadmill that could accommodate both wheelchairs and cycles. The system needed to offer the large running surface required for these applications while also supporting the university’s wider research activities.

As the treadmill would be used alongside motion capture technology, DCU requested a matt-black finish. This helps reduce unwanted reflections that could potentially interfere with optical motion capture cameras.

The university also required specialist flooring to be installed around the treadmill, creating a practical and professionally finished laboratory environment.

Choosing the h/p/cosmos saturn 300/125r

Following the tender process, HaB Direct was awarded the contract to supply and install the h/p/cosmos saturn 300/125r.

The saturn 300/125r is an oversized treadmill designed for specialist sports science, biomechanics and performance-testing applications. Its running surface measures 300 cm long by 125 cm wide, providing considerably more room than a conventional laboratory treadmill.

This additional space enables the treadmill to accommodate a variety of equipment and movement patterns. The specialist running surface is suitable for running, cycling, wheelchairs, roller skiing and skating, allowing one system to support multiple areas of research and testing.

The treadmill offers a standard speed range of 0 to 40 km/h, together with motorised elevation adjustment from a 27% decline to a 27% incline. This allows researchers to investigate performance and movement across a wide range of speeds and gradients under controlled laboratory conditions.

The system also includes digital interfaces that can support its integration with compatible external equipment and software. This can be particularly valuable within multidisciplinary laboratories where treadmill data may need to be used alongside motion capture, physiological measurement or other research systems.

For wheelchair and cycling applications, the saturn can also be configured with specialist options such as a wheelchair stabiliser and an h/p/cosmos safety arch with fall-stop protection. The exact configuration can therefore be adapted around the intended users and research protocols.

A Complex Installation

Supplying the treadmill was only the first stage of the project. Installing such a large and specialised system within the university’s new facility required careful planning and considerable technical expertise.

The treadmill could not simply be transported into the laboratory as a complete unit. The HaB Direct installation team had to dismantle the h/p/cosmos saturn, carefully carry its individual components up the stairs and reassemble the system inside the new laboratory.

Every stage of the installation needed to be coordinated carefully to protect the equipment, the building and the team involved. Once in position, the treadmill was reassembled and prepared for use, with specialist flooring installed around the system to complete the laboratory space.

The project was delivered by Pete Brown, Stuart Jackson, Jack Elliott and Anthony Franklin, combining HaB Direct’s product knowledge with the practical experience required to install large and complex laboratory equipment safely.

This expertise was an important part of the successful tender and ensured that DCU received support throughout the process, from identifying a system that met the university’s technical requirements through to completing the installation within the new facility.

The completed installation provides Dublin City University with a flexible treadmill system capable of supporting wheelchair, cycling and other specialist research applications.

This project also demonstrates the importance of considering more than equipment specifications when developing a new laboratory. Access, installation logistics, surrounding flooring, motion capture compatibility and long-term usability must all form part of the planning process.
